I dont understand the joy in the severe face piercing going on and on around the world. Trying to pop another ear hole for second pair of earring is excruciating enough.
These Chinese Bang Neow shrine devotees pierce their faces using anything handy. This was done at an annual vegetarian festival in Phuket, Thailand last weekend and during the festival, they stated the reason for the piercing and celebration.
The festival has been held in the city since 1825. Thousands attend the nine-day event and take part in the street procession. The festival not only features face-piercing but also spirit mediums and strict vegetarianism. It celebrates the local Chinese Taoist community's belief that abstinence from meat and stimulants during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar will help them obtain good health and peace of mind.
The event is in celebration of an opera group who recovered from malaria in the 1800s. Though the origins of the festival are unclear, according to Phuket.com legend has it the festival was brought by a wandering Chinese opera group in 1825 who fell ill with malaria while performing on Thailand.
Celebrants in the local Chinese Taoist community abstained from meat and stimulants In search of a cure, they adhered to a strict vegetarian diet and prayed to the Nine Emperor Gods to ensure purification of their minds and bodies. Perhaps thanks to these measures, they made a complete recovery from their ailments.
The people celebrate by holding a festival that honours the gods as well as expressing happiness at surviving what was then a fatal illness. The festival is attended by thousands, with participants flying in from China and other Asian destinations.
